Get to know one of the books published by NEES researchers

Open Linked Data

The book is a co-authorship of professors Seiji Isotani, from the Mathematical and Computing Sciences Institute of USP, in São Carlos, and Ig Bittencourt, from the Computing Institute of UFAL.

Released by Novatec Editora, the book is the first in Brazil to approach this subject and was born from a partnership between the researchers and the Center for Web Technologies Study (Centro de Estudos sobre Tecnologias Web – Ceweb.br) at the Center of Information and Coordination (Núcleo de Informação e Coordenação do Ponto BR – NIC.br), which also resulted in an online course.

“As there were no consolidated references on the subject in Brazil, we built the content with much care and discussion, including the consolidation of the translation of Open Linked Data to Dados Abertos Conectados”, highlighted the authors.

They state that the concept of Linked Open Data is fundamental to increasing the public transparency of information disclosed by federal, state, and municipal governments. Among the challenges that permeate the field, the authors cite the lack of technical knowledge on how to make data available in an open and linked manner, as well as the lack of technological knowledge about the existing tools to perform this task properly. In this context, professor Bittencourt points out: “The work is aimed at people from any field of knowledge interested in making data available on the internet, whether they are technicians or managers. Therefore, we try to write in the least technical way possible”.
